In the enchanting fortified ideal city of Josefov, history isn’t just remembered—it comes alive. On July 12–13, 2024, Josefov Alive (Oživlý Josefov) turned time back to the golden age of this 18th-century military masterpiece. This event offered visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant heritage of one of Europe’s most significant fortresses, combining live performances, interactive workshops, and grand historical reenactments.
Supported by the Hradec Králové Region and being part of the prestigious Europäischer Festungssommer organized by Forte Cultura and EFFORTS, the festival transformed Josefov into a bustling historical scene, brimming with life, culture, and the flavors of the past.
Friday: A Cultural Evening Beneath the Stars
The festivities began on Bastion No. IV, where visitors enjoyed an intimate evening of art, music, and history. The program opened with classical Czech fairy tales. Jarka Holasová brought to life Božena Němcová’s story ‘The Little Hen.’ Later, Vi.tvor’s puppet show ‘Long, Broad, and Sharp-Eyed’ presented the audience with intricate wooden puppets. As night fell, singer Jana Vébrová enchanted listeners with her poetic songs, accompanied by Petr Tichý on the double bass, creating a magical atmosphere. The evening culminated in a torchlit procession through the city streets. Soldiers in uniform led the way from Bastion IV, honoring Josefov’s founder, Emperor Joseph II, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at his statue on the other side of the city.
Saturday: A Full-Day Historical Journey
Saturday offered a rich program that showcased both the military and civilian aspects of life in Josefov.
The action began on Masaryk Square, where the imperial army arrived in a grand parade, followed by Emperor Joseph II himself. A short theatrical scene re-enacted a moment from 1784, highlighting the multicultural workforce that constructed the fortress. A humorous skit depicted a conversation between the emperor and the workers, each speaking a different language – Czech, Hungarian, German, and Polish. Visitors also marveled at demonstrations of falconry, halberd drills, and elegant period dances.
The Pressburg Trio performed at the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. Their program featured classical and romantic music on period instruments, with Vladimír Ondrejčák (SK) on the Viennese guitar, Radka Kubínová (CZ) on the transverse flute, and Krzysztof Bialasik (PL) on the natural horn. The concert’s theme was “Joseph II, Mozart, and Early Romanticism in Music”.
At Bastion IV, which has long been the home of the Artistic colony, guests explored the artistic side of Josefov. Workshops offered hands-on experiences, including Milan Bartoš’s traditional indigo dyeing (known as ‘modrotisk’ in Czech) and Petr Novák’s sculptural gallery and studio. For those seeking a deeper connection to history, Jiří Černý, longtime caretaker of the fortress cemetery, led a guided tour of this solemn site outside the fortress.
Battle Reenactment
A vivid re-enactment of life in and after 1938 brought the interwar period to life, featuring scenes of air defense drills and Josefov’s preparations for WWII.
At Ravelin XIII, the festival’s centerpiece—a dramatic battle reenactment—demonstrated historic military strategies. Soldiers showcased the construction and use of gabions und die cheval de frise, crucial defenses against cavalry.
A Celebration for All the Senses
Throughout the festival, Josefov offered a feast for the senses. Visitors indulged in Josefov beer, local delicacies, and artisanal crafts at the bustling market. Horse-drawn carriages for visitors added elegance to the streets, where promenading ladies in period costumes brought the city’s rich past to life. A special game was also available for children throughout the event and one of the stations was managed by our partner fortress, Kłodzko (PL).
All major attractions in Josefov were open to visitors, including Bastion I and the Underground, the Artistic colony at Bastion IV, Bastion IX, Bastion X, Ravelin XIV, the 3D model of the FIC Josefov, the blacksmith’s forge at Bastion XII, and the museums in the building No. 12, the Building Authority, and the Building Directorate. Additionally, local ecological organizations, including the Circular Center Jaroměř, were represented.
