The event marked an important step toward expanding the network\u2019s activities in Southern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">A Stronger Connection with Spain\u2019s Fortification Heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">From 5 to 8 November 2025, FORTE CULTURA took part in the <em>VII Congreso de Fortificaciones y Patrimonio Militar<\/em>, held in Valdepe\u00f1as (ES). The congress gathered experts, researchers, and heritage managers from across Spain to exchange knowledge on preservation, management, and innovation in fortification studies. Representing the European Cultural Route, Olha Tikhonova, scientific expert of FORTE CULTURA, delivered bilingual presentation slides and speech in English, introducing the network\u2019s mission and its potential role in strengthening collaboration across the Iberian Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">In her talk (co-authored with Dirk R\u00f6der), Tikhonova presented a forward-looking perspective on the fortified landscapes of Southern Spain, emphasizing their historical depth, diversity, and potential for sustainable development through cultural tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Spain, with more than 10,000 documented fortifications, was highlighted as one of Europe\u2019s richest territories of fortified heritage. The presentation proposed the <strong>creation of regional clusters within the FORTE CULTURA network<\/strong>\u2014especially in Campo de Gibraltar, C\u00e1diz, Granada, Seville, C\u00f3rdoba, and M\u00e1laga\u2014that could connect local initiatives with broader European narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The talk also addressed key legal and governance challenges, calling for more integrated heritage strategies and showcasing the value of digital tools\u2014including 3D modeling, augmented reality, and virtual tours\u2014for education, interpretation, and access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote eplus-wrapper is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough FORTE CULTURA, Spain\u2019s fortresses can form part of a shared European story, linking local identities to a common cultural future.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Olha Tikhonova<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">During the congress, FORTE CULTURA established contacts with representatives of three important <strong>fortification organizations in Spain<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-b94d17\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">REFORT \u2013 Red de Fortificaciones de Espa\u00f1a<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Asociaci\u00f3n de Amigos del Castillo de Montju\u00efc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Associaci\u00f3 de Castells Catalans i Edificis Singulars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">These organizations expressed strong interest in joining FORTE CULTURA and collaborating on joint initiatives. The Associaci\u00f3 de Castells Catalans, which includes legal expertise in castle-related matters, also publishes the journal Castrum and invited FORTE CULTURA members to contribute articles in English or Spanish. Such partnerships pave the way for new synergies between Spanish heritage professionals and the wider European fortification network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The congress included a series of <strong>field visits<\/strong>, offering direct engagement with Spain\u2019s historic and archaeological heritage:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\" wp-block-list eplus-wrapper eplus-styles-uid-e50837\">\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Cerro de las Cabezas Iberian Site and Interpretation Center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">BHELA Military Base \u201cCoronel S\u00e1nchez Bilbao\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Do\u00f1a Berenguela Castle, currently under restoration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Calatrava Vieja Castle, one of Spain\u2019s medieval landmarks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">These visits enriched the professional exchange and demonstrated the diversity and vitality of fortification preservation efforts in Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\">Looking Ahead to La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n 2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">The participation of FORTE CULTURA in the Valdepe\u00f1as congress marked a meaningful step toward building stronger connections in the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish experts have been invited to submit proposals for the upcoming FORTE CULTURA Congress in La L\u00ednea de la Concepci\u00f3n (April 2026) by 15 December 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Through these growing collaborations, FORTE CULTURA continues its mission to connect fortified monuments, professionals, and communities\u2014transforming
