Josefstadt Fortress is located in Jaroměř, in eastern Bohemia, near the Polish border at the confluence of the Aupa and Mettau rivers into the Elbe. It was built in 1780-87 by the Habsburgs against Prussia and renamed in memory of Emperor Joseph II (formerly Ples Fortress). In FORTE CULTURA, it complements both the cluster of “Elbe fortresses” and the new cluster of “Bohemian fortresses” with Terezín and Prague.
