La localidad est\u00e1 situada en el sur de la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica y fue fundada en el siglo XVIII como respuesta a la conquista de la pen\u00ednsula de Gibraltar por parte de los brit\u00e1nicos. Con varias fortificaciones en una l\u00ednea defensiva de principios del siglo XVIII, fue un importante baluarte contra la amenaza del Reino Unido a Espa\u00f1a. Conserv\u00f3 su car\u00e1cter fortificado hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial con la construcci\u00f3n de una l\u00ednea de b\u00fankeres.
