La ville est situ\u00e9e dans le sud de la p\u00e9ninsule ib\u00e9rique et a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 la conqu\u00eate de la p\u00e9ninsule de Gibraltar par les Britanniques. Dot\u00e9e de plusieurs fortifications dans une ligne de d\u00e9fense d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle, elle constituait un rempart important contre la menace que faisait peser le Royaume-Uni sur l'Espagne. Il a conserv\u00e9 son caract\u00e8re fortifi\u00e9 jusqu'\u00e0 la Seconde Guerre mondiale, avec la construction d'une ligne de bunkers.
