Fortified Ideal City Fredericia becomes first Member from Denmark

With the accession of Museum Fredericia (DK), FORTE CULTURA welcomes a new partner to the European Cultural Route and the network of fortified heritage. The museum represents the fortified ideal city of Fredericia in Denmark, thereby enriching international cooperation centred on Europe’s fortification heritage.

Fredericia was founded in 1650 as a royal fortified ideal city on the Little Belt and is today one of the most impressive examples of early modern urban and fortification planning in Northern Europe. Its strictly geometric layout, the preserved ramparts and its unique history as a free city characterised by religious tolerance make Fredericia an outstanding site of fortified cultural heritage. Further information can be found on the Portal turystyczny FORTE CULTURA.

With the addition of Museum Fredericia, the FORTE CULTURA cluster of ‘fortified ideal cities’ continues to grow: there are now six ‘ideal cities’ represented within the cultural route. This new addition strengthens professional exchange, raises the profile of this particular type of fortress and promotes the joint dissemination of European urban, military and cultural history.

FORTE CULTURA looks forward to collaborating with Museum Fredericia and, in future, to working together to bring the history of the fortified ideal city of Fredericia to life within the network and along the cultural route.
